Rare Breeds

I try to rescue any breeds of poultry that I find available and I know are either very rare, or have unique and desirable genetics. These are all in rather low demand, so I do not hatch these unless I want to increase my flock or have prepaid orders. I have noted what makes each of these special, and encourage others to ask about them. Many are fantastic birds that are underappreciated.

All the breeds listed below are going to be “hatch on demand” for 2026. Or you can buy hatching eggs and hatch them yourself. The advantage of prepaying and having me hatch them is that I can vaccinate them for you and you only pay for live chicks that are hatched.

Ayam cemani – All black chicken. Famous for being the world’s most expensive chicken. Not any more.

Ayam Cemani Putih – A pure white version of the cemanis. Super rare.

Genetic Hackle – Specialized feathers for tying dry flies. Also, the absolutely prettiest roosters ever! As ornamental and pet birds, these are the best I have ever kept!

Mottled Frizzle Cochin Bantams – Black and Lavender, some mottled, some frizzled. Cochins are the go-to breed for pets for kids.

Silkied Cochin Bantams – NOT silkie bantams, but a rare mutation in the Cochin breed.

California Greys – These are the most productive layers we have! So many white eggs, but alas, most people are looking for colored eggs.

Tomaru – Japanese Long Crowers. Excellent layers, but their eggs are smaller and light brown.

Breese – The famous French meat chicken, also one of the best laying breeds.

Rose Comb Brown Leghorn – Frostbite resistant, excellent layers

Rose Comb Black Minorca – Frostbite resistant, excellent layers

Egyptian Fayoumi – Disease resistance. Small breed that would be great as a feral chicken

New Hampshires – The best dual purpose breed I keep. Excellent for meat production. Super calm birds.
